How We Deal With Time
A Meditation On Transition
Things are what they are; there’s nothing we can do, like animals in a zoo,
We think everything is going OK, but we discover there is nothing new,
I’ve been in this predicament more times than I wanted to remember,
We have to deal with the realities from January through December,
Can’t live in fantasy land any longer; as we grow older, we are stronger.
But we have a choice; even with a raspy voice, we can speak clearly,
That whatever we cherish now we can lose easily and ever dearly,
None of us is guaranteed another day tomorrow. Fortune we borrow,
And no matter how good things seem, we can easily find sorrow,
One of the hardest realities is how fragile we all can finally be,
We can believe things are going well and then we are not free!
Everyone dies. Sooner or later we get ill, in a world that kills,
There is no promise that we will be able to pay all the bills,
We are as fragile as toilet paper that is flushed every day,
In sober minds, we need to reconsider how the game plays,
It’s all for keeps in the end; our family weeps over the loss.
As much as we hide from it, we all soon must face a cross,
An unexpected outcome that is more than we can ever bear,
We may have avoided great disasters, but suddenly we’re there,
We need to be diligent, humble and wise, with fully open eyes,
And for once not cajoling ourselves with many self-told lies,
Finding our centre, a new paradigm to enter, with strength,
Willing to reconsider, not be the highest bidder, at length,
To become the best persons we can be, finally to be free.
With finally open eyes, we recognise the prize and truths see!
